FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is to be a liaison between school leadership, central office supports, students, and parents/guardians. The Director of School Relations will interpret policy and administrative regulations to officials and the public, analyze requests, and provide recommendations for action to all stakeholders. This role works to establish a solutions-oriented focus in all communications, ensure consistent disciplinary responses across schools, and bridge school needs with resources to improve the school experiences of our students.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates school discipline efforts to include collaborating with principals and assistant principals to assess levels of school disruption and formulate consistent and supportive responses for our students. 
  • Coordinates external customer relations to include assessing parental concerns and requests for information and collaborating with school-based personnel to create student focused solutions.  
  • Facilitates the Alternative Assignment process working closely with principals and assistant principals.
  • Leads the process of ensuring that Board policies are up-to-date and in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.  Engages with RSS subject matter experts for policy review and modification as neccesary.  Prepares policies for review by the Superintendent and Board.  Coordinates the communication and distribution of policies to staff and others as appropriate.  
  • Coordinates professional development with the staff of Rowan-Salisbury Schools on best practices in customer focused communication.
  • Maintains various and complex record systems, including student suspension data and system survey.
  • Checks and reviews a variety of data for accuracy, completeness and conformance to established standards and procedures.
  • Reviews oral or written inquiries, including substantive or sensitive questions requiring research or technical knowledge and provides oral or written responses on behalf of Rowan-Salisbury Schools.
  • Prepares a wide variety of reports, documents and correspondence of a confidential and non-confidential nature (e.g., letters, memoranda, charts, periodic and ad-hoc reports, operational procedures, manuals, newsletters) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Makes decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:                    

  • Considerable knowledge of the organization and current operations of a public school system’s operational guidelines as it pertains to discipline and alternative assignment processes.
  • Works closely with students, their families and principals to support RSS policies and to build positive relationships
  • Ability to maintain a positive approach to public education and foster favorable public relations with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to interact professionally and appropriately with the public and district staff and parents in person, by telephone, and through digital communication.
  • General knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment.
  • Ability to compose a wide variety of complex written materials including related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence for the purpose of communicating information and/or creating documentation in conformance with established guidelines with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to maintain regular filing systems and search files for specific information.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum: Experience in customer relations and communications
  • Desirable: Experience in customer relations in a public education setting
